Discography

This discography is of all released material that I know of from SLF. Since they have been released on quite a few labels, and I really don't know all of them, nor all the countries they have been released in, I have listed only the original UK releases, with any others that I know of in the "notes" section of each entry. The original Chrysalis UK releases were also issued in the US, I believe with the same catalog numbers. I can guarantee that the Restless Retro US CD reissues are still in print and I believe that the EMI UK CD reissues are as well. If you know of any releases that I have not listed, please tell me so I can include them. Most of the notes are from Gordon Ogilvie's liner notes of All The Best; mostly verbatim, in fact, since who could really have said it any better anyway? To save loading time, I made links to the album covers and lyrics. Enjoy!

Release Date: 17 Oct 1978

Label: Rigid Digits / Rough Trade

Catalog Number: RT004

Tracks: Alternative Ulster
			78 R.P.M.

Notes: - Alternative Ulster is probably SLF's most well-known
song, showing up on many Punk compilations. It was
written at the request of a local fanzine, called
Alternative Ulster, for a flexi-disc giveaway which
later fell through. Jake Burns once introduced it
live as "a song about having nothing to do"

Notes: - Jake wrote At The Edge about the things his parents used

Label: Chrysalis

Catalog Number: CHS 2424

Tracks: Nobody's Hero
			Tin Soldier

Notes: - Nobody's Hero was Jake's response to over-zealous

became a personal friend, which they felt summed up how
many young people get trapped into dead-end lives

Release Date: 18 Jul 1980

			Mr. Fire Coal Man

Notes: - Back To Front was sparked by a renewal of skinhead seaside

			  heard on a reggae compilation

Tracks: Silver Lining
			Safe As Houses

Notes: - Silver Lining was Gordon's "idea to write a song that
reversed the usual complacent platitudes that people
try to fob you off with"
			- Silver Lining is probably my favorite SLF song, in all
respects. There is an unplugged version available in
three places (that I know of):
				- Can't Believe In You UK 12" (Essential)
				- bonus track on Get A Life US CD (Taang!)
				- B's, Live, Unplugged, And Demos CD (Dojo)
[see below for more details on these releases]

			Sad-Eyed People
			That's When Your Blood Pumps

a friend on his doubts about trusting people
			- Sad-Eyed People is also by Jake, about his observations
of fellow drinkers in a pub one night
			- That's When Your Blood Pumps is from an idea of Gordon's
about the moment of excitement when you come across a
new person, sound, opinion, or anything
			- Two Guitars Clash was written by Henry about his joy
			  at discovering new wave rock
			- there is an unplugged version of Listen, available
in three places (that I know of):

Label: Chrysalis

Catalog Number: CHS 2637, CHS 12 2637

Tracks: Bits Of Kids
			Stands To Reason

hopelessness of an inner city decay up-bringing
exemplified by snippets of the true stories of some
of the children taught by my [Gordon's] girlfriend"
			- Stands To Reason, according to Gordon, is "a Dolphin
song", but on the Now Then... record, the song is
credited to "Fingers/Ogilvie". I would believe
			  Gordon...
			- I know that there is at least a 12" of Bits Of Kids
			  because I own it

			Stands To Reason
			Bits Of Kids
			Welcome To The Whole Week
			Big City Night

Is That What You Fought The War For?

Notes:			- Love Of The Common People was written by Hurley/Wilkins;
it was introduced by Jake at a live show in 1993 as
			  "a big hit for Paul Young and a big flop for us";
			  incidentally, I think it's wonderful...
			- Now Then... has got to be SLF's least known and hardest
			  to find album
